Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian Winter Cherry or Indian Ginseng, is considered one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha’s botanical name is Withania Somnifera. It is a shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family. Ashwagandha actually received the name because its roots have the odor of a horse (Ashwa means horse and gandha means odor) and because it gives the body the strength of a horse.
The main part used is the root of the herb. The various medicinal properties of ashwagandha are attributed to the compounds called withanolides. I use ashwagandha for myself to stay in balance and for its calming and soothing effects; I use it for my children during the cold and flu season so they stay healthy or during times of increased stress; I use it in my pediatric patients to treat anxiety, ADD/ADHD, insomnia, depression, hypothyroidism, respiratory infections, mono and other diseases.
Ashwagandha is safe for long-term use. The only side effect could be occasional slight drowsiness, however, I haven’t ever had this side effect reported to me. Most claim immediate calm, balance and energy, along with mental clarity and satisfaction.

Thank you for the comment. I definitely think ashwagandha would be safe and effective for your son. It should help decrease aggressive behavior while increasing clarity and focus. Do you think he would tolerate the taste of liquid ashwagandha? Otherwise, I would take a 500 mg capsule, start with half of it (mix with something), then gradually increase dose. Also, has he been tested for candida?
Thanks for your reply. I’ll try Ashwagandha on my son soon.
You mentioned testing for candida. I had no idea that overabundant candida could be a cause of ADHD symptoms until I read your reply and did some research. That may be the case for him! Thank you for bringing that up. What’s the best test for candida? I hear the spit test isn’t very accurate.
Thanks!
No problem. I would use the Microbial Oat test from the Great Plains Laboratory. This is a urine test, so it’s very easy, yet very accurate in identifying yeast and/or bacterial overgrowth. Let me know how it goes!
I have a 5 year old son (almost 6) with ADHD. He’s 52 lb, big for his age.
He has been taking 5-10mg of Aderall for three months. The meds have been a wonderful change for him because he can actually pay attention in class, follow directions, do homework, reduced impulsive behaviors that get him in trouble, finally making connections with friends because he can pay attention and play cooperatively.
The negative side effects that I do not like are increased aggressive behavior, argumentative when he wants something (wont back down), and moodiness.
I’m looking into using Ashwagandha for my son as an alternative to Aderall. Is it safe and if so, what form and how much should I give him?
I have been taking Ashwagandha for myself to help me deal with the stresses of the day and I feel calm and collected with it, love it for taming my type A personality!
Please advise about my son.
Thank you,
